Edgar N Hobby Jr. passed away on December 16, 2013 in Greenville South Carolina at the age of 83, after an extended illness.  He worked for Joe Dodge in 1948 & 1949.

Mr. Hobby was born in Lynn, MA, the son of Eva and Edgar Hobby. Prior to college, Ed was a hut man at the Zealand Falls and Pinkham Notch AMC huts, and he also completed the hut traverse, hitting all the AMC huts in a 24 hour period.  He was in the Air Force ROTC while at the University of New Hampshire.  Upon graduation in 1954, he took up his commission serving as a pilot.  After retiring from the US Air Force, he spent the next 25 years as a pilot for Eastern Airlines.

He was a long time resident of North Hampton, NH where he was active in many organizations.  These included the UNH Parents Association, SU21 School Board, ALPA, Commodore and founding member of the Kittery Point Yacht Club, Pisquatiqua Race committee, the Town of North Hampton Bandstand Committee, and he was an active member of the United Church of Christ.  He had a lifelong love of hiking the White Mountains, sailing the coast of Maine, and travelling.  He combined his interest in trains and travel by taking many trips with the NMRA.  He also spent many hours building a model train replica of 1950’s Franconia Notch.

He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years Barbara (nee Dustin).  He is survived by his daughters, Sharon (Rick) Marooney of Monterrey, MX, Martha (Mark) Freitag of Greenville, SC and Elaine Hobby of Leesburg, VA, 15 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, brother Russell Hobby, sisters Christine Hobby and Charlotte Morrier and several nieces and nephews.

    Ed was 2nd cook to Tex Benton 1948 and 1949. Terrific old hutman; liked by everybody. Later career was airline pilot. Sleazy

    Actually he was living in Greenville, SC at the time of his death. This is my dad and we are seeking more info on the dates he was a hut man and what he did. His daughters have many happy memories of hiking up to Zealand each summer on our yearly camping trip. Any stories or info would be greatly appreciated.
